The incident happened after militants in Jammu opened fire on the truck the soldiers were travelling in, killing 5 soldiers.
Five Indian troops were murdered on Thursday in a truck attack in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Indian Army, which has revealed their identities. The 16 Corps of the Army, stationed in Nagrota, identified the fallen troops as havildar Mandeep Singh, lance naik Debashish Baswal, lance naik Kulwant Singh, sepoy Harkrishan Singh, and sepoy Sewak Singh.
The Whitenight Corps posted on Twitter, “The Whitenight corps stand in solidarity with the bereaved families.”
The soldiers were deployed for counterterrorism operations in the region while they were attached to the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles regiment.
The incident happened after militants opened fire on the vehicle the soldiers were driving in in Jammu’s Rajouri district, killing five of them and wounded another. Operations were started to find the offenders, however the assailants’ identities have not yet been made clear.
The Army had said in a statement that the unidentified attackers took advantage of the area’s heavy rains and poor visibility, and that the army truck caught fire as a result of a suspected grenade strike.
Numerous members of the political community sent their condolences, many of whom expressed disbelief at what had happened. “Terrible news of a terror attack in Poonch that claimed the lives of 5 army jawans in the line of duty,” National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah tweeted. I extend my sympathies to the families of those killed today, and I categorically denounce this horrific crime. May the departed’s spirits rest in peace.
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi and leader of the AAP, expressed shock over the deaths of the troops and demanded the harshest penalties be meted out to those “behind this cowardly attack.”
The Army Hospital in Rajouri is treating the injured soldier.
