In the most costly legislative contests in state history, Indian-American state senator Vin Gopal was reelected to the New Jersey Senate for a third term.
In New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District on Tuesday, the 38-year-old Democratic Senator overcame his Republican opponent, Steve Dnistrian, by over 60% of the vote, assisting in the Democratic takeover of both Assembly seats in the district.
According to his campaign, Mr. Gopal is the first South Asian American elected to the Senate in the history of the state and is now the youngest senator representing New Jersey.
On Tuesday, there were open polls in at least 37 US states. The 120 members of the state Senate and Assembly, representing 40 districts, make up the legislature of New Jersey. There are two representatives from each district in the Assembly and one senator in the Senate, who are elected to four-year terms each.
The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper reports that all 120 seats are up for grabs in the general election scheduled for November.
According to the New Jersey Monitor news portal, Republicans had made the Republican-leaning 11th District a top priority this year in an attempt to destroy the Democratic Party with a campaign focused on offshore wind and LGBTQ issues in schools.
The report states that one of the Republican Party’s main objectives for this year is Mr. Gopal’s district seat.
The nj.com news portal claims that the contest was among the most costly legislative races in state history. By October, Republicans had only raised USD 460,339 and spent USD 444,970, while Democrats had raised USD 3.4 million and spent USD 3.5 million. According to the report, money from various outside groups was also invested in the conflict.
First elected in 2017 and again in 2021, Mr. Gopal garnered 58% of the vote, while Dnistrian only received 38%. His bipartisanship and constituent services were the reasons behind his success.

As the leader of the Senate Majority Conference, Mr. Gopal also serves as the chair of the Senate Education Committee. According to his campaign, he chaired the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee in the past.
In addition, he serves as a member of the Health, Human Services, and Senior Citizens Committees and the Vice-Chair of the Senate Government, Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee.
In order to address the challenges the coronavirus posed to the local economy during the COVID-19 pandemic, he established a district-wide organization of leaders from the business, community, church, and nonprofit sectors.
Mr. Gopal was born and raised in New Jersey. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree and Rutgers University with a master’s in public administration.
