Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India, aimed at achieving physical, mental, and spiritual unity. The term ‘yoga’ comes from Sanskrit, meaning ‘to unite,’ symbolizing the harmony between the body and consciousness. Shiva, or Adiyogi, is considered the creator of Yoga, which was disseminated by the Saptarishis, his seven disciples. The ancient Yoga Sutra, a 2000-year-old text, outlines yogic philosophy and techniques for mental and spiritual control.

Yoga encompasses six branches: Hatha, Raja, Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, and Tantra, and identifies seven chakras. It includes 13 types, such as Kundalini, Vinyasa, and Hatha Yoga. Celebrated globally, the International Day of Yoga on June 21, recognized by the UN in 2014, highlights Yoga’s holistic health benefits. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores Yoga’s transformative impact on individual well-being and communal harmony.
