The administration of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came under fire on Monday from JP Nadda, the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, over a “horrific” video showing a man viciously attacking a couple in public. Nadda made accusations that women were “unsafe in didi’s West Bengal” and stated that MLAs and Trinamool Congress members were defending the act.
The Union minister wrote on X, “A horrifying video has surfaced from West Bengal, reminding of the brutalities that exist only in theocracies.” “To exacerbate the situation, MLAs and TMC cadre are defending the act. Didi’s West Bengal is UNSAFE for women, whether it is in Sandeshkhali, Uttar Dinajpur, or many other locations,” he said.
After a kangaroo court ruling, the man was shown in the video beating up a couple with a bamboo stick. According to reports, the individual was a local TMC politician from Chopra in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal.
The accused, Tajmul alias JCB, has been taken into custody and is being held at the Islampur police station. On Monday, he is scheduled to appear before the ACJM court.
Superintendent of Police Jobi Thomas stated, “Chopra police arrested the person and for safety reasons, they kept him at Islampur police station,” according to an ANI report.
Though Chopra TMC MLA Hamidul Rahaman refuted the party’s connection to the accused, he did note that the woman engaged in “unsocial” behavior.
“We denounce the occurrence. However, the woman erred as well. She turned into a terrible beast and abandoned her children, daughter, and husband. The Muslim Rashtra holds that there is a rule of conduct and justice. But we do believe that what happened was a little bit harsh,”
Shehzad Poonawalla, a BJP spokesman, attacked TMC as well, labelling it as “Talibani Mindset and Culture”.

Rahaman “has victim-shamed the victim and has even gone on and said that in a ‘Muslim Rashtra’ there are certain terms and conditions, thereby justifying this kind of barbaric act,” according to the BJP politician, who also blasted the TMC MLA.
In addition, he criticized Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi of the Congress leadership for being silent on the matter.
