After Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma too declares his T20I retirement: “Now is the best moment to say goodbye.”

T20 World Cup final

The victory in the T20 World Cup final versus South Africa, according to Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, was his final in the competition. In the press conference held after the game, Rohit reaffirmed this.

There’s no better moment to bid this format farewell than with this, given it’s also my final game. I have enjoyed every second of it. I hoped to win the World Cup when I first started playing for India in this style, Rohit said.

Emotional on the back of India’s first ICC tournament win in 11 years, Rohit added, “I am completely lost and can’t say what kind of emotions I am going through. Can’t explain it in words. Let this sink in. Last night, I couldn’t sleep as I was desperate and wanted it so badly. But I managed myself well inside the ground.”

The 37-year-old joins Kapil Dev (1983) and MS Dhoni (2007 and 2011) as the only other Indian skipper to have won a World Cup in any format.

Now, the Indian captain is the first-ever leader to guide a side to 50 Twenty20 international matches. The World Cup final victory over South Africa marked the 50th victory.
