Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi stated today that approximately 60% of terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir last year were of Pakistani origin, and around 80% of the terrorists currently active in the region are from Pakistan.
“The situation in Jammu and Kashmir is firmly under control,” he remarked. “The ceasefire along the Line of Control, effective since February 2021, remains intact. However, the terror infrastructure continues to persist across the region.” Gen Dwivedi, who has extensive operational experience along the Pakistan and China borders, briefed the media on the situation.
He further mentioned that infiltration attempts are still ongoing, including from the International Border sector, as well as drone activities aimed at smuggling weapons and narcotics.
While terrorist activities have increased in North Kashmir and the Doda-Kishtwar region in recent months, Gen Dwivedi reassured that the overall violence levels remain “under control.”
He highlighted positive signs, such as over five lakh pilgrims participating in this year’s Amarnath Yatra and the peaceful conduct of the recent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, noting that “the shift from terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape.”
On the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Gen Dwivedi described it as “stable but sensitive.” He mentioned that, following the disengagement of Indian and Chinese forces from the last two friction points in eastern Ladakh, patrolling and grazing have resumed in the traditional areas of Depsang and Demchok.
The Army Chief emphasized that the military is focusing on enhancing border infrastructure and strengthening its capabilities. “Our deployment is well-balanced and robust; we are fully prepared to handle any situation,” he asserted.
He also noted that India and China are working to restore bilateral ties, which had been frozen for over four years due to the military standoff in Galwan, Ladakh.
