The Champions Trophy will be held between February-March next year. It is considered difficult for Australia’s star batsman David Warner to play in this tournament. In fact, after the T20 World Cup, Warner announced his retirement from T20 International. However, a few days later he expressed his wish that if the selectors select him in the team for the Champions Trophy, he can make a comeback. However, now Australian team selector George Bailey has clarified that plans are being made to remove Warner.
Bailey’s shocking statement
Ahead of the Champions Trophy, George Bailey said, “Our understanding is that David has retired and he should be appreciated for his incredible career in all three formats. Of course, our plan is that he will not be in Pakistan.”
Warner’s career
Warner has been identified as an aggressive batsman. He has scored 3277 runs in 110 T20 matches for Australia, which includes one century and 28 half-centuries. Warner scored a century in T20 against Pakistan in 2019 and became the third Australian player to score a century in all three formats. Apart from international cricket, Warner plays in T20 leagues around the world, including the IPL. In 2021, he became the fourth batsman to score 10000 runs in T20.
Youth will get a chance
Australia will field a young team during their upcoming UK tour, which includes limited-overs series against Scotland and England. With the absence of players like Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell, Bailey said that more youngsters could get a chance in the team in view of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Bailey further said, “The next T20 World Cup is in 2026, so I think there may be some more changes than what we are seeing in this team. But specifically, not those guys (Stark and Maxwell), we have not had any conversation about that.”
