“Cancer Is Now Consuming Its Body Politic”: S Jaishankar Rips Into Pakistan

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered sharp remarks about Pakistan, likening the country to a “cancer” now harming its own society, during the 19th Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial Lecture in Mumbai. Reflecting on India’s diplomatic stance over the last decade, he highlighted the nation’s evolving approach to international relations.

“Pakistan is an anomaly in our neighbourhood due to its support for cross-border terrorism. That cancer is now affecting its own political fabric. The entire subcontinent shares a vested interest in Pakistan renouncing this path,” Jaishankar stated on Saturday.

Known for his candid perspectives on global affairs, the minister also underscored the need for India to stay competitive in critical and emerging technologies. “While India is non-West, its strategic interests are far from being anti-West,” he asserted.

Addressing economic challenges, he cautioned against the “weaponisation of financial institutions” and stressed the importance of boosting domestic growth while safeguarding external vulnerabilities.

Jaishankar described India as a ‘vishwabandhu’—a friend to all—and a dependable global partner, working to foster friendships and mitigate conflicts while prioritizing national interests.

He highlighted India’s commitment to building partnerships with regional players and middle powers, which has significantly enhanced its diplomatic reach.

Summarizing India’s diplomatic philosophy, he pointed to three key principles: mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest.

“The past decade demonstrates how we can make strides on multiple fronts, nurturing diverse relationships without exclusivity. In a polarized world, India’s ability to bridge divides has been a standout feature,” he concluded.
