On Saturday, while campaigning in Assam for the third phase of the Lok Sabha Election, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is terrorising the nation because he is losing ground, and he urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to maintain a level playing field in the elections.
“Modiji is scaring everyone by invoking the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and so on. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh never made statements like stealing someone’s mangalsutra throughout his ten-year administration. Modiji is losing credibility; his comment is meaningless.”
Earlier Indian week, Prime Minister Modi criticised the Congress’ platform, accusing it of attempting to modify a law to’snatch’ residents’ assets.
Modi stated that Congress and its supporters monitor people’s income and assets. “They want to amend the law to snatch the asset and mangalsutra of our mothers and sisters” , that’s what he claimed.
Kharge claimed that the BJP is propagating misinformation about the Congress’ electoral platform and attempting to give it a religious spin. “Everything in our manifesto benefits the poor, young, farmers, and women, yet they claim it is the Muslim League’s platform. “This is a shame,” he remarked.
He suggested that PM Modi study the Congress manifesto first. “Let him read it first and we can have a discussion on it later,” he said.
Speaking at a public protest in Barpeta, Assam, Kharge said that Prime Minister and Home Minister Amit Shah are selling government-owned companies including as railroads, highways, ports, and airports to Adani and Ambani.
“They promised to bring back the so-called black money and give ₹15 lakhs to everyone, but they waived off ₹16 lakh crore of the rich businessmen.” This is their definition of progress; they are not concerned about the country’s development,” Kharge remarked.
On Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s offer to Kharge to join the BJP ahead of the polls, the Congress chief said, “I am the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, I was the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha as well, where Modiji is the leader, I’d answer him, not a chief minister.”
“Who is my parliamentary opponent? Modi. I have limited experience in Parliamentary matters, therefore I will speak with Modi. Why is he (Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma) concerned? Let him confront our people here and then talk about me.
He described the Congress party as a flowing river where numerous leaders arrived, gained reputation, and then went. “Many of them became chief ministers, Rajya Sabha members, and held other roles. “They are the ones who say the most negative things about us, but it has no effect on us,” he remarked.
Assam held elections in two stages. The third phase, slated for May 7, would include polling in four Lok Sabha seats: Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Dhubri.
