Ravichandran Ashwin on Retirement and Gambhir: “If He Felt I, Kohli or Rohit Should Move On, That’s Fine”

R. Ashwin

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up candidly about his retirement decision and his views on head coach Gautam Gambhir, saying he fully respects the team management’s call—even if it meant senior players stepping aside.

Ashwin’s retirement during the India vs Australia Test series in December 2024 came as a surprise to many. He called time on his career after the Brisbane Test, finishing as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 537 wickets in 106 matches, behind Anil Kumble.

Reflecting on the decision, Ashwin said it stemmed from a clear realisation about his role in the team. After being rotated in and out of the playing XI during the series—while players like Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were preferred—he felt it was a sign that it was time to step aside.

“I’ve always trusted my decision-making. Whether it’s right or wrong is for others to judge, but it’s my life, and I wanted to do it on my terms,” he said, adding that he didn’t want to linger in hopes of a comeback.

Addressing speculation around Gambhir’s alleged favouritism, Ashwin took a balanced and mature stance. He emphasised that the coach has a responsibility to build the best possible team, even if that involves tough calls regarding senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

“If Gautam felt I had to move on—or even Virat or Rohit—it’s absolutely okay. He has a job to do,” Ashwin said, acknowledging that while such decisions can feel personal, they are ultimately part of the larger team strategy.

He also spoke about managing emotions and ego, admitting that while disappointment is natural, stepping back helps bring clarity. “In a country like ours, the admiration we receive can sometimes make us feel invincible—but that’s not reality,” he noted.

Ashwin further revealed that he has consciously worked on keeping his ego in check throughout his career, stressing that understanding one’s place in a team setup is crucial.

His reflections offer a rare glimpse into the mindset of a top athlete navigating transition, acceptance, and the larger good of the team over individual aspirations.
