To reduce border tensions, India and China reach an agreement

Following talks between their leaders, India and China have decided to reduce tensions along their disputed border, a senior Indian official said.

On Wednesday, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a conversation outside of the BRICS conference in South Africa.

Beijing claimed that Mr. Modi initiated a meeting with him.

For more than three years, India and China’s relations have gotten worse.

Along their ill-defined 3,440km (2,100 miles)-long border, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the two major nations are at odds with one another in the Himalayan area.

On the outskirts of the Johannesburg Brics summit, Mr. Xi and Mr. Modi had a meeting. Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa collectively known as the Brics are frequently considered as a counterbalance to the Western-dominated globe.

Vinay Kwatra, the foreign secretary for India, announced on Thursday that the LAC troop withdrawal initiative would be stepped up by both parties.

The maintenance of peace and tranquilly in border regions as well as adhering to and respecting the LAC are essential for the normalisation of relations between India and China, according to Mr. Kwatra.

He continued, “In this context, the two presidents agreed to instruct their respective officials to speed up efforts at rapid withdrawal and truce.

The two leaders held “a candid and in-depth exchange of views on current China-India relations and other issues of shared interest,” according to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry.

“President Xi stressed that improving China-India relations serves the common interests of the two countries and peoples, and is also beneficial for peace, stability, and development of the world and the region,” the statement said.

In order to jointly protect peace and tranquilly in the border region, it was also emphasised that “the two sides should keep in mind the overall interests of their bilateral relations and handle the border issue properly.”

it has been claimed that neither note-takers nor interpreters were present when the two leaders conversed. The last time Mr. Xi and Mr. Modi spoke was in 2022 outside the G20 meeting. On September 9 and 10, Mr. Xi is expected to arrive in India for the G20 conference, which Delhi is hosting.
