Trump’s son says Swinney was ‘nasty’ for supporting Kamala Harris in US election

Eric Trump has criticized Scotland’s First Minister for endorsing his father Donald Trump’s rival during the U.S. presidential election, describing the move as “nasty.” Speaking to the PA news agency, Eric Trump asserted that his father, the President-elect, remains unfazed by John Swinney’s remarks, saying, “I’m not sure it bothers him one bit.”

He also confirmed that Donald Trump plans to visit Scotland in the coming year for the opening of a new golf course in Aberdeenshire.

Eric Trump expressed frustration over the challenges of conducting business in Scotland, accusing the Scottish Government of making it “virtually impossible.” Despite this, he stated that his family’s continued investment stems from their “love” for the country.

During a visit to the Trump International Golf Links in Balmedie, Eric Trump addressed Mr. Swinney’s endorsement of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris just days before the election. He argued that the First Minister misjudged the political climate, adding, “He got it very wrong because my father won decisively.” He labeled the intervention as unnecessary and counterproductive, stating, “It’s a shame and did not help either the U.S. or Scotland.”

Eric Trump emphasized his family’s efforts to invest in Scotland, referencing their significant contributions, including the restoration of Turnberry. He lamented the lack of appreciation from the Scottish Government, saying, “I’ve never really gotten so much as a thank you.”

Asked about Scotland as a business destination, he remarked, “Truthfully, not really,” citing excessive red tape, high taxation, and regulatory delays that would have deterred most companies. However, he affirmed his desire to maintain a positive relationship with the Scottish Government and to continue investing in the country.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Government responded, emphasizing the enduring economic and cultural ties between Scotland and the U.S. and expressing their commitment to fostering these connections in alignment with Scotland’s values.
