Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad has suspended all flight operations until further notice

Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 – At least 133 people died when an Air India flight crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. The flight, carrying 232 passengers and 10 crew members, was taking off for London at 1:17 PM when the accident occurred.

Among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian. Thick smoke rose from Dharpur near the Meghaninagar area in Ahmedabad. Firefighters and emergency teams quickly rushed to the crash site to control the fire and assist survivors.

A senior police officer said, “As per preliminary information, a London-bound Air India flight crashed near the doctors’ hostel. Police and other agencies reached the spot within 2–3 minutes. About 70–80% of the area has been cleared. All agencies are actively working here.”

Officials have yet to confirm the crash’s cause, and investigations are ongoing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately contacted Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, directing them to travel to Ahmedabad and oversee rescue and relief efforts.

Earlier, Amit Shah also spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to coordinate the emergency response. The UK government acknowledged the crash, stating it is working with Indian authorities to establish facts and provide support to British nationals. They urged those needing consular help to call the provided helpline.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad has suspended all flight operations until further notice. To assist stranded travelers, Indian Railways announced it will deploy Vande Bharat trains to transport passengers from Ahmedabad to major cities until air services resume. Authorities continue to work urgently to manage the aftermath and support victims and families.
