Chief Justice Asks Lawyers To File Physical Letters For Urgent Listings

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna extended New Year wishes to lawyers and litigants as the Supreme Court resumed operations on Thursday following its winter break from December 21, 2024, to January 1, 2025.

“I wish you all a happy new year. May it bring happiness to you and your families,” the CJI remarked at the start of the day’s proceedings.

Addressing a technical issue, he noted, “I am informed that the email system for case mentioning is currently not functional. You may submit physical letters instead.” He assured that these letters would be reviewed in the afternoon, and necessary orders for listing would be issued.

Since assuming office, Chief Justice Khanna has ended the practice of oral submissions for urgent case listings before Supreme Court benches. He introduced a system requiring lawyers to request urgent listings through emails or written letters.

Traditionally, lawyers would present their cases for out-of-turn listings and urgent hearings directly before the bench led by the Chief Justice at the start of court proceedings.
