Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 | Fame Finders Desk

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was on board Air India Flight AI-171, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was flying to London Gatwick but lost contact with air traffic control just five minutes into its journey. The aircraft plunged into the Meghani Nagar locality, a crowded residential area, killing all 242 passengers and crew. The crash also claimed at least 133 lives on the ground and left many others injured.

Rescue teams rushed to the site within minutes. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire services, and medical teams worked around the clock to search for survivors, put out fires, and clear the wreckage. Thick smoke and burning debris filled the neighborhood, adding to the chaos and destruction.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the crash. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) are leading the probe, with technical support from Boeing. Investigators are focusing on the cockpit crew—Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar—both seasoned pilots. Black box data and maintenance records are being closely examined to determine what went wrong during takeoff.

The Adani Group, which manages the Ahmedabad airport, issued a statement offering condolences to the victims’ families. The group confirmed full cooperation with the investigation. Officials are reviewing the runway’s condition, communication systems, and the timing of the takeoff clearance to check for any possible lapses.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu have expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Both leaders assured the public that the government will hold those responsible accountable. A final report from the investigation is expected in the coming months.

This incident now ranks among the worst air disasters in Indian aviation history. The tragedy has highlighted serious concerns about flight safety, emergency preparedness, and the need for strict enforcement of aviation regulations.
