Foxconn, the iPhone manufacturer, is reportedly in discussions with the Uttar Pradesh government to establish a new facility in Greater Noida, which is expected to generate 40,000 jobs.

Sources say that both UP government officials and Foxconn representatives have already held two rounds of meetings, in Delhi and Lucknow, regarding the proposed project. This new facility will focus on mobile phone manufacturing and will add to Foxconn’s existing presence in India, where it is Apple’s largest contract manufacturer globally.

The new facility is planned to be set up on approximately 300 acres of land, complementing the 50-acre joint venture project Foxconn has with HCL for an outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) facility. Earlier reports had also mentioned that the HCL-Foxconn joint venture is in talks with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Taiwanese company CTCI for the OSAT facility, with the joint venture awaiting Cabinet approval. Foxconn is investing $37.2 million to hold a 40% stake in the venture.

This new facility will not only boost the local economy but also include residential accommodations for workers. The UP government is eager about the project, given that the Noida-Greater Noida region already accounts for nearly 50% of India’s mobile phone exports.

“Greater Noida is an ideal location for an Apple facility, and its establishment will further strengthen the region’s ecosystem,” the sources said.

In 2023, Foxconn began manufacturing the iPhone 15 at its Tamil Nadu facility in Sriperumbudur. After the US imposed tariffs under Trump, Apple transported 600 tons of iPhones, or around 1.5 million units, to the US. The company also worked with Indian airport authorities to reduce the customs clearance time at Chennai airport from 30 hours to just six hours.
