New Year’s Eve: Masks Must, No Whistling At Public Places In Bengaluru

As Bengaluru prepares to welcome the new year, authorities have implemented stringent security measures to ensure public safety during the celebrations on Tuesday. Notably, whistling has been banned, and wearing masks in public places is now mandatory.

On the bustling MG Road, where over a lakh revelers gather annually for midnight festivities, more than 2,000 police personnel will be stationed. Popular hubs such as Brigade Road, Church Street, Indiranagar, HSR Layout, and Koramangala will feature special lighting arrangements. Koramangala alone will see an additional deployment of over 1,000 officers to enhance security.

To maintain order, a mini control room will oversee CCTV footage from 150 cameras installed at sensitive locations. Flyovers will be closed, while metro and bus services from MG Road will operate until 2 a.m.

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has issued a warning that individuals found harassing women will face a ₹500 fine and be handed over to the police. Security personnel will also be present in every metro coach to ensure passenger safety.

Special initiatives for women’s security include the Rani Chennamma Special Squad and the establishment of 12 safety islands. Watchtowers have been erected, and healthcare facilities will be available throughout the celebrations.

The city’s traffic police, known for their vigilance during New Year’s Eve, will continue their crackdown on drunk driving. Last year, around 330 motorists were caught driving under the influence.

These precautions follow a troubling incident in 2017 when MG Road saw chaos, with reports of women being molested and harassed in the midst of massive crowds. Many described the scene as a near stampede, with girls crying and calling for help. Despite the gravity of the incident, then Home Minister G. Parameshwara had defended the city’s police presence, offering no formal apology.

This year, authorities aim to ensure a safe and joyous celebration for all residents and visitors in Bengaluru.
